Aphonopelma seemanni, commonly known as the Costa Rican Zebra tarantula, is a hardy terrestrial species native to Central America, particularly Costa Rica and surrounding regions. It is easily recognized by its dark brown to black body contrasted with distinct pale or white striping across the legs, giving it a bold “zebra” pattern. This species is generally calm but can be skittish and quick to retreat, often preferring to flee rather than stand its ground. When disturbed, it may flick urticating hairs as a primary defense. A. seemanni is also an avid burrower, spending much of its time in self-dug tunnels or under cover. In captivity, it does best in a terrestrial setup with deep substrate to allow for burrowing, along with a hide for security. Ideal conditions include temperatures around 72–78°F (22–26°C) and slightly moist substrate, though it tolerates occasional dry periods. Good ventilation is important to prevent excess humidity buildup. Feeding consists of appropriately sized insects, and like many terrestrial tarantulas, it is a patient ambush predator. Due to its hardiness and manageable temperament, Aphonopelma seemanni is a popular choice for beginner to intermediate keepers.
