Shopping for a Western Hognose on ReptileAds

This category brings together western hognose snakes listed by hobby breeders and dedicated hognose projects. You will see hatchlings, juveniles and proven adults, in everything from wild-type normals to multi-gene combinations built on albino, anaconda, arctic, toffee and lavender.

Use the filters to narrow by sex, age and genetics, then open a listing to read the full description, the seller's notes on feeding and the photos. Because hognoses are sexually dimorphic, check whether a listing is a small male or a larger female before comparing.

Found a line you like? Message the seller through built-in chat to ask about feeding records and parentage, check their profile and reviews, and set a Hit List alert so you hear about new western hognoses that match your search.

Choosing a Western Hognose

ReptileAds gathers western hognose listings from breeders and keepers in one place, so you can compare lines, genetics and sellers side by side.

Morphs Side by Side

Compare normals, single-gene animals and multi-gene projects in one grid. Filter by genetics to focus on the combinations you are building toward.

Talk to the Breeder

Use built-in chat to ask about feeding history, hatch dates and parent animals before you commit. Good hognose breeders are happy to share their notes.

Hit List Alerts

Looking for a specific morph or a female of a certain size? Save a Hit List alert and get notified when matching western hognoses are listed.

Western hognoses are compact, burrowing snakes whose needs are simple once the setup is right. Here is the general picture:

  • Enclosure: a secure tank with more floor space than height, plus hides at both ends. Adult females need more room than males.
  • Heat: a warm side in the high 80s °F with a cooler end in the mid 70s is a typical approach, run through a thermostat.
  • Humidity and substrate: fairly dry conditions with a deep, loose substrate such as aspen they can dig into.
  • Diet: most captive-bred westerns eat appropriately sized frozen-thawed mice, offered every 5 to 10 days depending on age.
  • Handling: short, calm sessions. Hissing and hooding are bluffs, and most settle quickly once picked up.

For full temperature ranges, brumation notes and feeding charts, read the ReptileAds western hognose care guide.

A few questions to ask the seller will tell you a lot about the snake you are considering:

  • Is it eating frozen-thawed mice on its own, and how many consecutive meals has it taken?
  • What is the hatch date and current weight?
  • What are the parents' genetics, and which genes are visual versus possible hets?
  • Was the sex determined by probing or popping, and at what age?
  • How will the snake be shipped or handed off, and what happens if weather delays shipping?

Clear photos from the top and belly, plus a recent feeding log, make it much easier to compare listings fairly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most adults are 2 to 3 feet long. Females are noticeably larger and heavier than males, which often stay under 2 feet.
Yes, many first-time keepers start with one. They stay small, most eat frozen-thawed mice readily, and their dramatic bluffing usually fades with calm handling.
With good care a western hognose commonly lives 10 to 15 years, and some reach their late teens.
Rolling over with the mouth open is a natural defensive act. It is most common in young snakes and usually becomes rare as they get used to their keeper.
Anaconda is an incomplete dominant gene that reduces the pattern. A superconda carries two copies and is typically patternless.
