Centruroides gracilis, commonly called the Florida bark scorpion or slender brown scorpion, is a buthid species native to Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. Though established in Florida and other regions such as the Caribbean, parts of Africa, and the Canary Islands, it is not native there. Adults show sexual dimorphism: males are longer and more slender (50–153 mm) with elongated tails, while females are shorter and stockier (60–100 mm). Color varies from reddish-brown to black, sometimes with lighter legs or faint banding. It is semi-arboreal, commonly found under bark, in crevices, or around buildings. This species is viviparous, producing 25–47 young (up to 91 recorded) that remain on the mother’s back until their first molt. Adults may live communally, though juveniles can be cannibalistic. Its venom is moderately toxic, causing pain and mild systemic symptoms but is not considered dangerous to healthy adults, especially compared to Centruroides sculpturatus. Fast and skittish, it prefers to flee and feeds on small invertebrates.
